In 1911, when our ancestors have laid the foundations of the local gymnastic association “Unak”, they have never even dreamed that a team from a small town could break the frame and transcend the province level, until the day when it becomes obvious that the thrown seed has found a fertile soil. Just a few decades after, the first success was brought by the volleyball team – for several years, national tournaments have held at the local open volleyball stadium.

During the years, beside the volleyball, Lukovit has become famous with its Marine Club. For a long time the very idea looked quite extravagant even for the local people, but shortly after our gifted and ambitious sportsmen have been covered with fame at national, and even international level. Around 1970, the Marine Club started its activities and shortly after a diving course was organized, thus helping the beginners to turn into excellent “marine” athletes in several different disciplines: marine twelve events competition, motorised water-sports, swimming with flipers and especially uderwater orientation.

The landscape of Lukovit Municipality offers great opportunities for climbing and speleological activities due to its karst nature – more than 600 caves, 240 of them are mapped, and among them are nature phenomena as “Prohodna” and “Temna dupka” caves. So, in 1964, a first-of-its-kind Country cave gathering has been held in village of Karlukovo, in which representatives from Bulgaria and other countries took part. The same year club “Peshterniaka” was born.
